Wonderfest 2009 is a San Francisco Bay Area Festival of Science held in the spirit of Carl Sagan to get everyone interested in science by showing off the beauty, awe and wonder that is inherent in scientific discoveries.
As described by the Wonderfest web site:
Wonderfest’s broad goals are best described by its mission statement: Through public discourse about provocative scientific questions, Wonderfest aspires to stimulate curiosity, promote careful reasoning, challenge unexamined beliefs, and encourage life-long learning. Wonderfest achieves these ends by presenting series of scientific events to the general public. At most of these events, pairs of articulate and accomplished researchers discuss and debate compelling questions at the edge of scientific understanding.
This is a two-day event. Saturday will be held at Stanford University, and Sunday will be held at UC Berkeley. Admission is free, but you should RSVP through the Wonderfest web site.
Discussions are by science experts in their fields, and are open to audience participation. These talks include:
- Does Moore’s Law Apply to Energy Technology?
- Does Media Violence Inspire Real Violence?
- Is Evolution Still Darwinian?
- Do Robots Make Better Astronauts?
- Does Darwin Illuminate Emotion & Spirituality?
- Which Stars Support Intelligent Life?
- Can We Create Life?
