The Central Valley Alliance of Atheists and Skeptics would like you to help us design our new logo. Create something great, and you can win a prize!
CVAAS has traditionally used an outline of the California Central Valley, with text in the Zapfino or Ariel font.
The second “A” in CVAAS is usually the Zapfino font and red. This is the ‘Scarlett A’ used by the Richard Dawkins “Out Campaign”. The Scarlett A is meant to symbolize atheism and rational thought, and is used to encourage atheists to come out of hiding and let people know they exist. This is traditionally something that CVAAS encourages.
There have been several attempts to create a logo that symbolizes all of atheism. The problem isn’t that there is a lack of suggestions, the real problem is getting everyone to agree on the symbol!
When PZ Myers asked for suggestions, he got a lot of them! And atheists, being the stubborn cats that they are, refused to be herded toward any single symbol. No matter which symbol won, a majority of atheists hate it.
This isn’t too surprising – look at The Brights – rational thinkers are still complaining about this name, and people who say they enthusiastically follow the Brights Movement refuse to call themselves a Bright.
It’s a good thing we only need a logo for our organization!
So here is the deal. Create something you like. Even if it is a crude drawing with a detailed explanation – go ahead and get it to CVAAS. You can post it as an embedded image in the CVAAS Logo Contest discussion on Rational Valley. You can post it in your own Flickr or Picasa site and then link to it on Rational Forum. You can also email it to CVAAS at cvaas.post@gmail.com (Please note that this is a Gmail address, we are doing this because Gmail scans attachments for viruses.)
And if you have something hand drawn, and need help in getting it online, just let us know and we can scan it in for you.
So what’s the winning entry going to receive as a prize? I don’t know yet. At the minimum, you will receive a $30 gift certificate from Amazon.com. If anyone else wishes to donate other items for the winner to receive, please send an email to info@cvaas.org.
