The Central Valley Alliance of Atheists and Skeptics is hosting the first ever Heretic's Barbecue on the first Sunday of September, 2008.
We
are inviting every secular and or skeptical person and group from
throughout the Southern Central Valley, and beyond. This will be your chance to meet like-minded people who are in or are starting secular or skeptical groups. For those who wish to start a group in your area, this event will provide an opportunity to pick the brains of those who have already been where you are going.
The goal is to gather and meet those people who can help each other. We hope to have a lot of fun, all while doing a little networking and collaborating.
The
details are still being firmed up. Currently we are planning on
renting a 78 person pavilion all day at the Letterman Park in Clovis.
This park also features full bathrooms, water, power, barbecue
pits, covered seating, trees, and a brand new skateboard park for the
kids. Your kids are definitely invited! Dogs are allowed in
the park, but must stay leashed.
There will be a fee for this event, but it will be minimal. At this point it will probably be less than $10 per adult, and will go to reimburse us for food and services. However, we may be inclined to waive the fee for anyone who brings a pot luck dish.
CVAAS is also looking for a speaker for this event, and possibly a Master of Ceremonies / Event host to keep us at least somewhat organized.
We will start taking reservations to attend this event over the July 4th weekend. The CVAAS website will host the reservations link and give a method of pre-paying.
What we need now are volunteers to work on the Heretic's Barbecue select committee to organize and set up this event. I'm opening up reservations here for those people who wish to sign up for this committee. We need at least 5 people to make this happen smoothly (well, as smoothly as possible). But if we get more than 5 volunteers, I'm sure we will find places for them. Anyone want to volunteer to do the cooking?
